When I say the MMPI-2 is fairly objective, there are specific scales (PK, PS) and characteristic profile patterns that might indicate the presence of PTSD.
We hear a lot about active service members being diagnosed with personality disorders, only later to be more accurately diagnosed for specific non personality disorders, including PTSD. Of course the VA's folks probably wouldn't have the nerve to ask you the questions in this test to your face. It's much easier to go sit a veteran down in front of a computer, diagnose a personality disorder with the MMPI-2 and deny a claim than it is to sit down with that veteran and ask the same questions in the test and get a detailed response that would be interpreted much differently. "Judge Sam Pendino ruled in June that "there is a genuine controversy surrounding use of this test" and "no hard medical science to support the use of this scale to predict truthfulness." He said that drawing conclusions from a test that gives points for malingering when a plaintiff gives honest answers to questions based on actual injuries "has no place in this courtroom." The judge in Florida had this to say about the MMPI-2 in his courtroom: The WSJ article says the FBS (Fake Bad Scale) test was designed for personal injury claimaints: why is being used on America's veterans? Some of those who have brain injuries I might add. The FBS was designed for personalinjury claimants." Butcher's primary strategies for criticizing the FBS is to apply it to groups for which it was never intended, and then complain that it isn't appropriate. It concluded that the Fake Bad Scale generated an "unacceptably high" rate of false verdicts of malingering, and also that it was biased against women." "The authors argued it was unlikely that so many psychiatric inpatients could or would have fooled doctors into diagnosing and admitting them to hospitals. In every subgroup, women had much higher scores than men." Using a higher cutoff score, 24, the researchers still found that 23% of people were flagged as possible malingerers.
"More than 45% of psychiatric inpatients had Fake Bad Scale scores of 20 or more, meaning they were possible fakers, under Dr. They looked at more than 20,000 people, including several thousand psychiatric inpatients, who had taken the MMPI and calculated their Fake Bad Scale scores by checking their replies to the scale's 43 questions."
Butcher and some other researchers published a report critical of the Fake Bad Scale in 2003. I can't agree that we can call the MMPI-2 results objective at all if inpatients that got put in the hospital by their doctors can't pass the test and get labled as malingers. The VA needs to discontinue using the MMPI-2 and administer only test specific to PTSD. There is evidence supporting those suffering from PTSD, who have been diagnosed with PTSD, and have taken PTSD specific tests indicates only 1/2 of 1% of this group showed a positive score in the direction of PTSD. However, the VA uses the MMPI-2 as proof of a PTSD diagnosis. These 35 question have proven to be unreliable in assessing or predicting PTSD. For example, there are only 35 of the 567 questions to assess PTSD. It is my opinion that veterans should not take the MMPI-2 if it is offered because of these 6 major factors and a dozen or so other factors that make the outcome of taking the MMPI-2 questionable. The MMPI-2 lumps all people taking this test into the same category failing to account for gender differences. The MMPI-2 is not gender specific leaving outcomes improbable as women and men have unique psychological dimensions. Hypochondriasis, psychopathic deviate, hysteria, and psychasthenia are no longer listed in DSM-5, thus making the MMPI invalid.Ħ. Since the advent of DSM-5, half the scales are no longer valid. Many judges have rule the MMPI-2 inadmissible in forensic cases.ĥ. The "fake bad" scale has been researched and found to be no more reliable than a lie detector test. Regardless of the individual, even if the person is relatively a normal person, will produce an outcome of at least 2 Clinical Impressions and at least 2 Personality Disorders.Ĥ. So a person taking the MMPI-2, who may by all other means be a sane person, are being compared to the chronically mentally ill as the basis for its findings.ģ. The MMPI was developed in the 1930s by Hathaway and McKinley Ģ. There are a few things people may not know about the MMPI-2, so I will list as many problems as I know about this Personality Inventory then provide some advice.ġ. I have in the past scored and interpreted the MMPI-2, but I no longer use it for anything. I have seen many references about the MMPI-2.
